The Solar is located in one of Guadalajara´s most cultural boulevards (Chapultepec´s avenue). By day it is a commercial/economical zone, while by night lots of bars and coffee shops gives it a different life. The concept is precisely to impulse this non-stop transformation of people and activities, by giving a program that attract people with different interest and most importantly: a program that does not deny the pass of time. Aside from this, I didn’t want to create a big architectonic object that once extruded up pushes the passer-by to a stretch banquet or street, but rather a space on which one can walk on, just like a park. Like if the solution for architecture was to make parks or any open air space, that can shelter all the indoor activities, like working in an office, watching a movie, taking a drink, reading or buying a book, see an exhibition or give and listen a conference, etc. Invisible architecture.

How to make this utopia possible is the aim of this project; the dualism of in and out, open but sheltered, building but park, etc. The best way to explain this, is imagining a building from above, where only the roofs could be seen, and the free space and relationship that it creates with the overview of the streets around it. So I wanted to keep as much “free roof to walk on” as possible, to keep it as close as possible to the ground level and at the same time make it lodge a big activity program during day and night. The roof of the building is a continuous ramp, under which all the inner program is fit together. It is like a “Lego” construction covered by a handkerchief. The vertical fluxes are inside, and from the outer ramp, one can access the insides at any level. The indoor programs lodge the library, parking place, offices, research and documentary center, the gallery, the two auditoriums and the services; the outdoor program “lodges” the open air scenes, terraces, coffees and bars and the free spaces for lying down, reading, playing, etc.
